On Wednesday, February 27th 2008 26 ECA met together with Giorgi Meladze (UGRAD ’01) at the Alumni Resource Center to discuss the newly founded higher education institution called the “Free University”. Meladze, the founder and director of the above mentioned Free University, made a PowerPoint presentation for the audience and talked about the advantages of the newly founded University. Free University was organized together with the European School of Management and the Tbilisi Asia-Africa Institute, and soon they will start building a campus for the university in Tbilisi that will aspire to the European standard for universities. According to Meladze, “We spire to the highest educational standards and hope to make the best university campus in Georgia, and last but not least our main goal is to quickly find a place among the best hundred universities of Europe.”
The meeting was very interesting, as alumni Tamar Papava ’07 said: “I am really excited to hear that this Free University is being founded in Georgia. I think it is very important for Georgian youth to have universities with high standards formed in our country. Not everyone is lucky enough to go to the US through FLEX or other programs and learn about high standards and education systems in developed countries like America. I was even more excited to hear from Giorgi Meladze that there will be 3 full scholarships available for students applying to the Free University. It is sad that I myself have missed the chance to compete for these scholarships to the Free University, but it’s never too late: I might even change my mind and transfer there.”
The meeting was especially interesting and useful for those alumni who are still studying for their Bachelors degrees and who are interesting in doing graduate study in the near future.
